Forty-two years after Brisbane couple John Ebert and John Stafford fell in love, their relationship will be recognised by the law.

The Civil Partnerships Act came into effect in Queensland today, granting same-sex couples legal rights and bringing the state into line with Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.

The two Johns, who met when they were eight and have been together since the age of 18, will be among the first to have their relationship formally recognised.
